What to Expect During Your Hearing Test

Consultation/Case History
We start by discussing your hearing and medical history, medications, lifestyle, noise exposure, and any concerns you have. By getting to know you and your individual needs, we can tailor the evaluation.

Comprehensive Evaluation
Using the latest technology and gold-standard practices, we:
- Examine Your Ears: Our audiologist will use an instrument called an otoscope to inspect your ear canal and eardrums and assess the overall health of your ear.
- Measure Ear Function: Next, using a tool called a tympanometer, they’ll perform non-invasive tests to check how sound travels through your middle and inner ear.
- Test Your Hearing: You’ll wear headphones followed by a special headband to determine how well you can hear different pitches, tones, and speech sounds. Speech testing can be done in English or Chinese.
- Evaluate Hearing in Noise: Because everyone struggles differently in noise, the audiologist will use a special assessment called a QuickSIN to evaluate your hearing in noisy environments.

Results and Guidance
After your test, your audiologist will walk you through the results, answer your questions, and clearly explain the recommended next steps. If you could benefit from hearing aids, you’ll have the opportunity to try them during your visit.
Signs You Should Schedule a Hearing Check
We recommend getting your hearing tested, regardless of your age, if you:
- Notice a change in your hearing ability
- Have difficulty listening in noisy environments
- Find yourself turning up the TV volume
- Frequently have to ask people to repeat themselves
- Have difficulty hearing over the phone
- Experience fatigue because you have to concentrate hard while listening
- Have challenges participating in group conversations
- Have received comments from loved ones about your hearing or speaking volume
- Have ringing or buzzing in your ears
- Frequently misunderstand words

How Often Should I Have a Hearing Test?
Our Markham, Ontario audiologists recommend having a hearing test at milestone events in your life, such as entering university, turning 50, and retiring. These are excellent opportunities to detect changes in your hearing while providing a baseline to compare against in the future.
At age 60, we recommend having your hearing checked every two years. If you’ve been diagnosed with hearing loss or have a familial history of hearing loss, an annual assessment is highly recommended. Hearing loss is gradual, and regular assessments ensure we can identify changes early. Addressing issues is important for healthy aging and being able to engage fully with the world around you.
